2014 is the year of the horse on the Tibetan calendar, occurring every twelve years. According to Tibetan tradition, Buddhists make a pilgrimage to various holy mountains in the year of horse. As the most sacred mountain in Tibet, Mount Kailash receives more visitors than others, especially during Saga Dawa Festival which is held near the Kailash region annually each April on Tibetan calendar (around May or June on the western calendar).
To visit the Mount Kailash, three Tibet permits are required for foreign travelers, including Tibet entry permit, Alien’s travel permit and Military permit. These permits must be applied through an authorized travel agency.
