Questions & Answers
Everything you need to know before visiting Tibet.
Permits & Entry
Yes. All foreign visitors to Tibet require a Tibet Travel Permit (TTP) in addition to a standard China visa. Depending on your itinerary, you may also need an Alien's Travel Permit for areas outside Lhasa, and an Everest Base Camp Permit for our 7-day tour. We handle all permits on your behalf — this is included in your tour price.
Yes. American citizens need a Chinese tourist visa (L visa) to enter China and Tibet. You must apply for this yourself before travel — China visa fees are not included in our tour price. We recommend applying at least 4–6 weeks before your departure. We can advise you on the process.
No. Foreign visitors are not permitted to travel independently in Tibet. You must be part of an organized tour with a licensed tour operator and a registered local guide. This is a Chinese government requirement that applies to all foreign nationals.
Altitude & Health
We take altitude very seriously. Lhasa sits at 3,656m (11,995 ft) and Everest Base Camp is at 5,200m (17,060 ft). We provide complimentary portable oxygen bottles in all our vehicles throughout every tour. Our 5-star hotels in Lhasa have in-room oxygen. Our best available accommodations near Everest Base Camp also have in-room oxygen. Our itineraries are carefully paced to allow proper acclimatization. Read our altitude guide for detailed information.
Most healthy adults can travel to Tibet with proper preparation. However, people with serious heart or lung conditions, severe anemia, or uncontrolled high blood pressure should consult their doctor first. We recommend all travelers consult their physician before booking. We also recommend discussing altitude medication (such as Diamox/Acetazolamide) with your doctor before travel.
Our tours operate every Monday from July through December (no tours in March) (no tours in March). The best months for clear skies and mountain views are July–October. November and December are colder but offer dramatic landscapes and fewer crowds. Tibet's monsoon season brings some rainfall from late July through August, but tours continue and the landscape is lush and green.
